Looking for puppy training classes in Stoke-on-Trent that are reward-based, friendly, and completely force-free? Second Nature Behaviour is delighted to offer a six-week puppy course at Keele Village Hall on Thursday evenings, giving you and your pup the best possible start together.
Our puppy training classes in Stoke-on-Trent are led by highly qualified, experienced, and ethical dog training instructors who are also accredited Animal Training Instructors and Clinical Animal Behaviourists registered with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC). Our dog training instructor, Megan Richardson, is also a member of the Professional Association of Canine Trainers (PACT), APBC and FABC. She is also a Fear Free Certified Trainer. That means you’re not just getting basic obedience tips — you’re learning from professionals who truly understand how dogs think, feel, and learn.
Over six weeks, your puppy will build essential life skills in a supportive, relaxed environment. From settling on a mat and responding to their name, to loose lead walking, recall, and coping calmly with real-world surprises, every exercise is taught using kind, science-backed methods that help your puppy feel confident and safe. We also keep our class sizes small (maximum 6 dogs each class) to ensure you and your puppy receive the support you need.
Whether this is your first puppy or you just want to do things the right way, our puppy training classes in Stoke-on-Trent are designed to set you both up for a happy, well-connected life together.
In some cases, if an animal is performing a concerning behaviour, or there is some underlying negative emotion, then this may indicate that the animal has a behaviour problem rather than a training issue. In these cases, the pet and owner will benefit from a behaviour assessment and consultation on veterinary referral.

Who is eligible for our puppy training classes in Stoke-on-Trent?
- Puppies under 20 weeks of age when starting the course
- Puppy owners dedicated to reward-based, ethical dog training methods
- Puppies and owners looking to develop basic training skills
- The puppy's main handler must be 18 years or over
- Puppies must be fully vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms
Please note: Our puppy training classes will not be suitable for puppies or dogs with behaviour problems, such as reactivity on walks, separation anxiety or fearful behaviour around people or other dogs. With the behaviour plan in place and lots of hard work from us as a family, we now have a more relaxed dog. Echo shows nervous aggression whenever people come near him. The overall consultation process has helped us as a family to understand Echo a lot better and why he acts as he does at times. The behaviour plan is always on hand to help us in certain areas with Echo and it works so long as we all stick to it, which we do. Without Zoe coming to see us and organising a behaviour plan for our border collie, I feel I would have had to rehome him. We still have a long way to go, but we now know Echo and how he reacts in situations and why so we can quickly defuse it. Whilst Gracie is still an anxious dog, she has made incredible progress and if we are completely honest, more progress than we thought she could make. Gracie came to live with us from the Retired Greyhound Trust. Gracie was finding life very difficult as she was incredibly anxious and her inability to sleep through the night, cope with anyone other than us coming to the house and her extreme nervousness on encountering other people on walks was making us doubt if we could keep her. This was extremely upsetting for us as she is a very loving dog. As a result of Gracie’s issues and the stress, it was causing her and us, we were referred to Second NatureBehaviour by our vet. Zoe visited us at home and spent over three hours observing Gracie and talking with us about our experiences with her. This consultation was very successful and almost over-night enabled us to improve the ways we approached and helped Gracie, through: Diagnosing Gracie’s condition as generalised anxiety disorder and gaining a full understanding of the implications of this condition; Working in partnership with our vet to create a clinical as well as a behavioural plan; Teaching us how to “address” Gracie in order to reduce her stress levels – this technique we were able to share with visitors and had a great calming effect; Using treats to reward small steps forward that quickly grew into lasting improvements; Recognising some of Gracie’s stress triggers and developing a regime that reduced them / where possible avoided them; and A behavioural programme that helped Gracie during stressful times. Gracie has now been part of our family for 15 months. There is still a lot to be done to continue to help Gracie, but thanks to Zoe’s input, when she is at home with us she is now a happy, playful, confident and very affectionate dog. During walks she is nowhere near as scared of traffic, people, noises as she used to be, and no longer ‘freezes’ as she used to at times. The coaching we have had from Zoe through the initial visit and follow up has given us confidence that we can, over time, continue the progress Gracie has made so far to help her live an even fuller and happier life. We would absolutely recommend Zoe to anyone who has an animal struggling with behavioural problems, as the progress we have seen Gracie make is wonderful, and has made our lives much better, too. Pebbles is just wonderful! Thank you ever so much for your help and support – we couldn’t believe the improvements with her after just one week. Now a few months later we are pleased to report that Pebbles has made remarkable progress – we have newfound confidence! When before she became extremely anxious when left alone, now we find Pebbles will often settle down on the mat or sofa and just wait quietly. We have returned to her being pretty calm and relaxed, although on one occasion she did put all the sofa cushions on the floor first to make herself more comfortable! Whilst on her walks she is now getting plenty of run-time on the training lead and loves to play fetch games. Socialising with other dogs is increasing and Pebbles seems much more comfortable with all kinds of breeds now. Pebbles loves people and she is also improving when we have visitors. There is still more work that needs to be done for her greetings, but she has definitely improved in this area. All in all, we are so pleased with Pebbles’ progress! Your visit came at a crucial time and helped us focus on what steps we needed to take first, so thank you. We seriously couldn’t have wished for a better service! We were honestly at our wit’s end and at a loss with how to cope. From day one of meeting you, we felt reassured and more confident in understanding Pebbles’ needs and how to integrate her into family life.

The suggestions Zoe made were easy to follow. Some of the things we were already doing and others just simple things like closing the kitchen blind have helped enormously. When you have a puppy/dog, you don’t realise how easy it is to give out crossed signals and they obviously respond, affecting their behaviour. It was really interesting and once at home and going through the training booklet; well I think it is worth anyone who takes charge of a new pet to seek out advice from a behaviourist like Zoe because it could prevent many problems from occurring. We are really pleased we decided to see Zoe and are trying our very best to put in place the suggestions she has made. Alfie’s behaviour is improving already, although we realise there is never a quick fix. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Zoe and the practice to anyone who needed the service. Murph now sits patiently on the mat by the back door while I get my shoes on, coat on and lead out. He also sits by my side while I open the back door and waits for my say so before he leaps out the door! Much more controlled, calmer behaviour. He is walking on the lead much better too. He was always good on the way home but always tugged on the way out. Now no tugs on the lead! Haven’t quite made it to the vets yet, but we are working on it! Now working on tricks on his mat in prep for the vets. Sit, down and look in his ears etc. I have even let him sniff the vets step most times we walk past. Onwards and upwards! We have put a lot of Zoe’s advice into practice and Kizzy has turned into a lovely and very loving dog. Things with her and our older dog, Gyp, are much better and no further incidents. We continue to walk them together but without risk. Both go to kennels when we have breaks where we can’t take them with us and show no hassle/anxiety when we leave them, although they are both pleased to see us when we return. Kizzy’s impulse control over food has improved greatly. She now sits and waits patiently while we sort her food out, put it on the floor and doesn’t move until we tell her. All in all though we are managing really well! Kizzy’s so affectionate it’s unbelievable and there are two elderly ladies in the village who make a beeline for her when they see her to give her a fuss and let her kiss them, on the face too! Her reaction to joggers and cyclists is now just a long look, no pulling or wanting to join them as before and she just carries on walking, no break in stride etc. Zoe’s advice has made us more aware and conscious of what we do with both, not just Kizzy. We have recently had the pleasure to work with Megan to help our three year old maltipoo Harry with anxieties and reactivity which has quite honestly impacted on our lives and made us so sorry that Harry was not settled and happy and also that our joy in having this beautiful little dog in our lives was spoilt. Megan is so friendly, professional and absolutely knows what the problems are and ways to deal with them. There is no quick fix and it was clear that we had to put a lot of work in and actually still do. We were able to contact Second Nature and Megan in particular between visits about anything and we always received a helpful reply. A detailed plan was sent to us after our initial meeting and a report after each subsequent meeting detailing what we had achieved and the ongoing plan. We also have a comprehensive folder to refer to on so many situations in training and worries and how to approach and manage them. I cannot recommend Second Nature highly enough after we wasted money in the past on so called trainers. It is still a work in progress but we have a much calmer, happier little dog and we are calmer happier pawrents.

We feel that we understand him a whole lot better and can anticipate his needs and create an environment he feels safe in. Our work also helped to identify where pain as also a factor. Also changed his diet now100% better than before thought there was no way back and being disabled was really upset as my dog was my companion and thought the worse. Have met Zoe from Second Nature Behaviour at home several times – at home, in a local park and on Teams chat. We didn’t know how to deal with our dog, Bertie’s anxiety, particularly with having a baby granddaughter to look after a couple of days a week, but after being shown various techniques and being given some pointers – including making a few low-cost home modifications – we now feel much more confident in being able to have both Bertie and granddaughter together. Zoe also taught us some useful techniques outdoors for dealing with situations where Bertie encounters other dogs. Megan Richardson
Megan has always known that she wanted to work with dogs, and she has always been fascinated with dog behaviour and training. When she experienced her own dog having behavioural problems, she realised that she wanted to pursue a career as an animal behaviourist and dog trainer, so that she could help others with their own animals’ behavioural difficulties.
Megan has worked in a variety of different types of animal collections, especially in boarding and rescue kennels and catteries, along with running dog training classes. This experience has brought about a passion for animal welfare as well as for behavioural rehabilitation.
Megan graduated from Harper Adams University with a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, then grew her clinical behaviour practice with dogs and cats. She has many years of experience and is an independently accredited Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB). Megan is an active member of various organisations, including FAB Clinicians, APBC and PACT. Last but not least Megan is registered as a CAB and ATI with the ABTC.
Keely Needham
With a deep passion for animal welfare, Keely has over 15 years of experience working with companion animals, during which time she developed a special interest in their behaviours and interactions. It was a chance meeting with a Clinical Animal Behaviourist many years ago, and a better understanding of the role that led her to pursue it as a career.
Keely graduated from Harper Adams University in 2021 with a first-class honours degree in Clinical Animal Behaviour and Welfare. She is a Certificated Member of the Fellowship of Animal Behaviour Clinicians, and previously worked part-time as a behaviourist for a large animal welfare organisation. Keely has independent CCAB accreditation in dogs and is currently working towards her independent feline accreditation.
Keely has a wealth of experience working with dogs of all breeds and backgrounds and has a passion for understanding the complex needs of troubled dogs and enhancing the bonds with their care-givers and owners. Keely primarily provides clinical canine behaviour services in Shropshire and the West Midlands

Who can join the classes?
There is a limit of two people per puppy, and the main handler must be at least 18 years of age. Children over the age of 8 years of age are welcome to join. Only the puppy booked onto the session may join the classes, so other household dogs are not permitted. Puppies must be fully vaccinated and be up to date on flea and worming treatment. Puppies must also be no more than 20 weeks of age by the first class.

I think my puppy might have a behaviour problem. Can they still join the classes?
Dog behaviour problems are usually caused by an underlying negative emotion, such as fear, anxiety or frustration. On the other hand, dog training issues are usually caused by dogs not understanding what's being requested of them, or they may not be motivated enough to perform the behaviour requested. Examples of dog behaviour problems include aggression towards people or other animals, appearing distressed when left alone, or appearing fearful of certain noises.
Our puppy training classes are aimed at those wanting to teach their puppies basic training and life skills, such as "sit", recall, loose lead walking, and general patience. The classes are not suitable for addressing behaviour problems such as fear or reactivity. How quickly will we see results?
There is no quick fix to any kind of training problem. The training plan advised may produce results very quickly, but often it will take time, effort and commitment from all of the family to produce the improved behaviour. It really varies from individual to individual. However, support from us is ongoing, as you need it.
Why should I book with Second Nature Behaviour?
Currently, in the UK anyone can practise as a dog trainer whether they have any qualifications and experience or not. However, there are moves afoot to put pressure on the government to regulate the profession. The Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) is one body that aims to be an umbrella regulatory body for the sector. The Council is made up of several professional trade bodies, representing animal trainers and behaviourists to the public. The ABTC sets and maintains the standards of knowledge and practical skills necessary to be an animal trainer or behaviourist. The ABTC maintains national registers of appropriately qualified and experienced practitioners. A strict Code of Conduct and an annual CPD (Continuing Professional Development) requirement is expected from the professional trade bodies who are members of the Council.
The Professional Association of Canine Trainers (PACT) is an example of an ABTC practitioner organisation that assesses individuals who wish to be accredited as Animal Training Instructors (ATIs).
Zoe Demery, who runs Second Nature Behaviour, has a doctorate in animal behaviour and a first-class honours degree in zoology and psychology. She is a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) in dogs, cats and parrots, which means she is fully accredited with the ABTC and CCAB Certification. She is very happy to be a Certificated Member of FAB Clinicians.
